Riverfront Plans:

SEED Project
Makes Big Impact on Augusta
Making his way to Augusta, University of Arkansas at Fayetteville Landscape
Architecture student, Stephen Gilbert, carried with him the plans that could
very well be one of the biggest positive impacts in Augusta’s history.
Stephen, a native of Crossett has been
working on plans for the city for over a year and has gone far and beyond what
started out to be riverfront park project. His plans include not only a first
class riverfront park, but a river walk, amphitheater, public fishing piers,
floating boat docks, more river access, and several downtown projects as well.
Stephen has really made Augusta his
home town over the process of this project, putting all of his talents and all
of himself into it.
Several citizens, organizations and city leaders gathered on February 15 to view
the plans at the Augusta Housing Authority community center. Stephen shared his
work and answered questions, leaving those attending very emotional and excited
over what may soon become a reality for the city.
The project was also part of Stephen’s final grade. In December, Augusta
Councilman Ward Hanna, and Augusta City Planner Kip Davis traveled to the
University of Arkansas at Fayetteville to view the plans and watch the grading
process from the professors of the University. Stephen, who impressed everyone
with his designs, received the grade of an A-, but those attending Friday’s
meeting in Augusta gave him an A+.
SEED (students engaged in economic development) Projects, are quickly gaining
popularity in Arkansas. Students, who are involved in the projects, usually
senior year university students, come into interested cities and apply their
skills to solving a problem, designing a project, etc. The project is counted as
part of their final grade and is at very little cost to the city. It helps the
students with their grades and leaves the city involved with some wonderful
plans. Usually the city is only out of students expenses, gas, and food. Each
project can be estimated at costing the city around $1,500 or less.
Some of the other SEED Projects that have taken place in Arkansas were in
McCrory, West Memphis, and Wynne. All with extremely positive results.
